    Blade-Free LASIK
Connecticut LASIK surgeon pioneers ALL-LASER Blade-FREE approach to LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Fichman is one of the first LASIK surgeons in Connecticut to use IntraLase Method™

    Intralase LASIK Eye Surgery

It is truly amazing that LASIK eye surgery is even possible! It is even more amazing that the technology keeps making the procedure better and more effective. The IntraLase Method™ is a proven technology that makes LASIK safer and more predictable. Dr. Fichman has been dedicated to the best results with the most safety since day one of performing laser vision correction. The IntraLase LASIK Method™ was a logical option when the technology became available. Since 2001, IntraLase, a femtosecond laser has been used in over 200,000 LASIK eye surgery procedures with no reports of serious sight-threatening complications. Numerous FDA studies confirm that LASIK patients see much better following IntraLase Method™ than with a Blade-Driven microkeratome. The Intralase Method™ is not used in cataract surgery. Intralase is also not used in intraocular lens surgery.

    The IntraLase LASIK Method™Difference

Traditional or conventional LASIK involves manually creating a corneal flap with with a mechanical, hand held device known as a microkeratome. Although traditional LASIK is very effective, the early years of LASIK surgery indicated that most complications occurred as a result of this blade-driven mircokeratome. What if we could reduce the rate of flap complications? What if we could make LASIK safer? These were the questions going through the minds of the IntraLase LASIK Method™ developers. When using the IntraLase LASIK Method™ pulses of laser light are used to create the corneal flap instead of this microkeratome. This laser controlled device creates a very accurate flap. The flap creation with a laser instead of a blade is the difference between traditional microkeratome LASIK and IntraLase LASIK Method™. Once the flap has been created the LASIK doctor can then begin the excimer laser treatment portion of the procedure. The flap is then lifted and the excimer laser is applied to reshape the cornea. After the laser treatment the flap is repositioned and drops are applied.

The IntraLase LASIK Method™ uses a femtosecond laser to create the LASIK flap. A femtosecond laser is an infrared laser that can treat tissue very accurately with much less heat created than other laser treatments. This is a tremendous advantage for LASIK eye surgery. These lasers work with ultra-short impulses of light (10-15 seconds) that last only a quadrillionth of a second to create a spot as tiny as 1/100mm. (EUROeyes). The LASIK surgeons now have a machine that offers a better flap making potential. By using the new intralase FS laser and proprietary IntraLASIK software, surgeons may avoid the complications related to the microkeratome and metal blade problems.

    Common IntraLase Method™ Questions

    What is the IntraLase Method™?

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure: creating the corneal flap. The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the LASIK procedure, where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision.

How does the IntraLase Method work?

Intralase Blade Free LASIKThe IntraLase Method uses tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create your corneal flap—instead of using a metal blade—during the first step of LASIK. Each pulse of light passes through the top layers of your cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within your eye that is determined by the doctor. The IntraLase® laser moves back and forth across your eye, creating a uniform layer of bubbles just beneath your corneal surface.

Just prior to applying laser vision correction, the doctor creates your corneal flap by gently separating the tissue where these bubbles have formed. The corneal flap is then folded back so the doctor can perform the second step of your LASIK treatment.

What is the difference between a corneal flap created with the IntraLase Method and one created with a microkeratome?

Intralase Blade Free LASIK The microkeratome is a hand-held instrument, which contains a steel blade that moves back and forth and creates a cut as it travels across the cornea. A microkeratome is only capable of making a single, one-dimensional cut across the cornea. As it cuts, the blade oscillates back and forth, which can leave an irregular surface after the flap is lifted. This can affect the quality of your postoperative vision.
