MonoVision LASIK Eye Surgery
If you have problems reading or seeing at both near and far you want to consider monovision LASIK. Monovision is not for everyone so make sure to discuss this directly with Dr. Fichman at the Fichman Eye Center.
Monovision is a unique method of treating vision when people experience visual problems at both close and far distances or when presbyopia causes accommodation issues. Presbyopia occurs as part of the natural aging process. The eye’s crystalline lens loses its ability to bring close objects into clear focus. Monovision used to involve wearing one contact for close vision and the other contact for far vision. Not all patients like monovision because it requires some adjustment and training of your eyes, however; most patients are able to make this adjustment. Patients that suffer from presbyopia often use bi-focal glasses as a treatment option. Bifocal contact lenses are now available. Monovision LASIK can also be an option. The FDA has approved CustomVue Monovision LASIK.
MonoVision LASIK
FDA Statement, July 12, 2007 - RELEASED ON FDA WEBSITE
The FDA approves CustomVue Monovision LASIK
“The approval of the CustomVue Monovision LASIK expands permanent vision correction options for nearsighted adults who also have trouble focusing on objects close-up,” said Daniel Schultz, M.D., director of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Unlike traditional LASIK, Monovision LASIK may reduce the need for reading glasses in some people over 40.”
If you are a patient considering monovision LASIK you should first wear monovision contact lenses for at least a week to determine if you can make this adjustment. Please consult Dr. Fichman directly regarding this procedure. Monovision LASIK is definitely permanent surgical procedure and needs to be carefully considered. This test is quite comfortable with the newer soft contact lenses. The newer lenses are usually placed in the eye by Dr. Fichman at the time of the initial consultation for Monovision LASIK.
