Many people experience difficulty reading after the age of 40. If you vision has deteriorated and you are tired of the hassles of reading glasses Dr. Fichman might have a solution for you!;

PRK- Photorefractive keratectomy or Advanced Surface Ablation
A Lasik eye surgery alternative
Because Fichman Eye Center is a complete ophthalmology and vision correction center, we offer more options than just Lasik. If you are seeking the best possible outcome for your vision, it is best to consult a complete ophthalmologist and not just a Lasik eye surgery chain. Although Lasik eye surgery is a great procedure and has helped millions of people see without glasses and contact lenses, it might not be the best vision correction option for you. After a thorough pre-operative evaluation our Lasik surgeon and the staff at the Fichman Eye Center can begin to understand what your best options are.
PRK is similar to Lasik and both of these eye surgery techniques are referred to as refractive surgery. PRK was the first laser refractive surgery approved by the FDA, receiving final approval in 1995. PRK is a safe refractive procedure that utilizes the excimer laser to reshape the cornea and improve nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The amount of tissue reshaped depends on the severity of the prescription. In most cases, 5-10% of the cornea is removed. Once the corneal shape has been altered, light rays are more easily focused on the retina. PRK differs from Lasik in that no flap of tissue is created prior to re-sculpting the cornea with the excimer laser.
The procedure can be preformed once the eye has been numbed with anesthetic drops. A speculum will be positioned to hold your eye lids open, just like in Lasik, so that your lids will not interrupt the actual surgery. The Lasik surgeon will then remove the outer corneal cells and proceed with the actual laser treatment. The laser delivery takes less than one minute to complete for most patients. Once the laser treatment or refractive ablation is completed, the corneal curvature has been reshaped, thus improving the refractive error. Your Lasik surgeon will then place a bandage contact lens on the eye for improved comfort during the healing process.
PRK is a safe, effective alternative to Lasik for many potential refractive surgery patients. PRK results are very similar to Lasik results. In general, PRK patients will have a somewhat slower recovery period. Post-operative follow up appointments will be scheduled as follows: day one, day two, day four, one week, one month, 2-3 months and 4-6 months. The bandage contact lens can usually be removed on the fourth post op day or when the corneal surface has healed. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops will be used one week to six months following the procedure. Yearly eye exams are recommended.
